Mainly Linux Mint

Put your Linux Mint system on your local network

First edit your samba file to include your network's name:
In your terminal, enter:

sudo gedit /etc/samba/smb.conf.

Find the "network name" line and enter your current network name. Now save the file.

Using the Software Manager install "system-config-samba" and "samba" program files.

Now create a folder on your desktop that can be used for sharing.
Rignt-Click on that new folder and set up sharing: the Share Folder, Allow Others and Guest Access will all need to be checked.

Note: as a tip - when connecting to a network shared with windows computers on the network, you may have to go into the windows network and sharing settings (on the windows machine) and enable sharing for devices that use 40 or 50 bit encryption for them to see each other.
